Update, January 7, 2013: A commenter wanted to know Sheriff Dept. avg pay and here it is:
Thanks Paul
ReplyDeleteA little sunshine sometimes can be used as a disinfectant.
Nampa also has more police officers / thousand population than either Meridian or Caldwell--Nothing like doubling down
Thank you for this useful information.

There is a smelly problem in the Nampa PD!!!
Sgt. Tim Randall was the Officer who was in the middle of the early morning car chase that left 4 Nampa police cars wrecked, citizen's property damaged and parked cars(s) damaged. He authorized the high speed pursuit of a DUI suspect. All this damage and the risk to people in the area made no sense when they could have followed this guy to his home and arrested him in his driveway. THE GUARDIAN filed a public records request on this event and it was met with the BLUE WALL OF SILENCE by the Nampa Police, Canyon Sheriff, and ISP. Records of this have been swept under the rug of silence.
ReplyDeleteMayor Henry is making some staff changes. Maybe he will look into the upper echelons of NPD staff and make some changes there.
DeleteMore corruption, stonewalling, deflection, whitewashing.....
ReplyDeleteWe will have a new mayor and most of the city council tomorrow night . Hopefully some of these things will start to change.
ReplyDeleteHow much do the sheriff's make? You left them out.
ReplyDeleteThe deputies start out at about $36,650.00 per year if I am reading the jobposting s correctly.
DeleteThe Canyon county sheriffs dept. gives each deputy their own patrol car. These vehicles sit unused when the deputy is not on duty. I know of one patrol vehicle that sat for 2 weeks last year while the deputy was on vacation I t may make sense to do so with a resident deputy out in the far reaches of the county but those that operate out of the Caldwell office should be sharing vehicles. I would guess we could reduce the number of vehicles we have to buy and maintain by at least 1/3 if we did this and still provide the necessary service
ReplyDeleteand you would still wear the cars out twice as fast by hot seating them and would still go through the same number or more of cars in the same time period. You would not save a dime. I know because they tried it before. Think about it, Suppose you run a car to 120,000 miles before taking it out of service and replacing it. Suppose a deputy drives 30,000 miles a year. If two deputies tag team that car it will be worn out in 2 years. If one deputy drives it, it will get replaced in 4 years. So what have you accomplished? Nothing.
DeleteHopefully, Nampa's new mayor and city council will get out the books and sharpen the pencils and help Nampa's middle-class recover from the disastrous era of Team Tom Dale.
ReplyDeleteyou should also compare administrative positions in the cities such as mayor, finance and see how they differ. These comparisons are only on emergency personnel compare everyone position and I think you will find its the same across the board
ReplyDeleteGovernment employment is a great deal for workers. Despite what they claim about making less, the reality is most jobs pay very well. You don't see a lot of turnover and their retirement benefits are defined via PERSI and they can still contribute to a "457" deferred compensation plan with pre-tax dollars. Elected officials all make a very nice income as well.
ReplyDeleteCities have to watch out on getting into debt. If a city gets into debt and files bankruptcy, the first thing they will go after are the former city workers pensions. I think that Mayor Henry will get Nampa away from that pathway to debt. I am glad he is in there now.
DeleteTurnover may not be a problem at the city, but at the county it's the nature of the beast. It's a continuous process of recruitment and training to fill the holes. As you can imagine this costs us all a fortune for the sheriff to have such an unstable work force. Just imagine if he could keep jailers for longer than two years and actually recapture some of that investment.
