Property Taxes Up 21% in Caldwell

The following is a letter to the editor of the IPT by Guardian reader Chuck Stadick.  He has outlined all the increases and where the money is going on property tax assessments this year.

"Just received my 2013 property tax bill, and it has gone up 21 percent vs. 2012. The major taxing agencies with increases were city of Caldwell, up $223; Highway District 4, up $34; Vallivue School District, up $147; and Canyon County, up $52.

Thanks Mayor Nancolas, school and highway officials, Canyon County commissioners, and last but not least, the urban renewal committees. I’m sure the feds will chime in and increase my Social Security by that amount once they find out, don’t you think?

* Chuck Stadick, Caldwell"

    1. This is a shining example of Idaho stupidity regarding Mr. Obama. How does Obama have one thing to do with local property taxation? If anyone can explain this idiot's logic, I will give it some of my complete and undivided attention.

  2. It is a little late to be complaining. The election was last month

  3. Just wondering if Chuck attended any of the district's budget hearings??? Hardly anyone does, if you didn't you have no right to complain. If you did bravo and complain away.

    1. Why should Chuck have to attend budget hearings? We elect city councils and county commissioners to represent all of us. I attended a few budget hearings and found them to be an exercise required by some obscure law. Very few numbers were presented and no input from anyone was taken seriously. Elected officials are there to represent taxpayers and work in their best interests and not be a rubber stamp for the Mayor or County Department Heads.

    2. Based on that logic why do we need to vote. Why don't we just let those in office select there replacements and be done with it all. If you don't particapate in the process, however futile, you have no right to complain. Simple.

    3. Paul,

I've often said that if Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and Meyer Lansky were to be reincarnated by Satan and told they could go back to Las Vegas to reestablish their criminal enterprises, their response to Lucifer would be, "You can keep Vegas! Send us to Idaho! It's really easy pickin's there!"

  4. Vallivue school district went up again by another $147? No surprise there, they just passed a $50 million dollar school bond. Of course it was held not during a regular election cycled and was rushed to the polls quietly so as few people as possible would find out and they could load the ballot boxes with just their supporters. Imagine if we ran the jail bond that way, hmmmmmm.

  5. You need to look at your property tax assement sheet to see if it is acturate, and protest it if it isn't. Last year the assessor added a "new" deck that had been there for 20 years. When I called them and told them to look at the photos that they have in my folder, they dropped the "new " deck off the assement. I also asked about the two masonary chimleys they added. I have no masonary chimleys, they dropped the nonexistant chimleys. The assessor sent out to update my home, did a walk around and added any thing he /she could think of. Watch out for these people, they are not on your side, they want your tax money. Don't be afraid of these bullies, stand up to them or be prepared to get screwed by them. My assessment was lowered by $35,000.00. I looked at the folder the Canyon County Assessor has on my home, lots of pictures of my propery taken 5-6 years ago or more.

  6. Funny thing happened over here in Nampa. A friend of mine has some property over by NNU, and the taxes there went up a little bit sharper this year. Another friend of mine has some property on the north side of E. Roosevelt in the same area as NNU but not as close and his place is taxed like a slum. The Restaurant Grapevine has heard talk about a University District being established in Nampa. Seems like some of us can smell some monkey business collusion going on between future city leadership, and local NNU leadership in the near future.

  7. Don't have any idea what my op-ed had to do with Obama; someone must be a little touchy about Obama's performance? His name wasn't in my op-ed at all. Re property taxes, I went in to protest at the county office several times to no avail, even when they didn't have a good comp to compare my property with others; my opinion. Our particlular subdivision has been bankrupted several times and now CBH homes owns it. I also went to the election forums but we were not allowed to ask questions; strictly bias to a local newspaper and TV reporters. Been to budget meetings also and have submitted my name for a Caldwell City Council seat. Guess I was an idiot for trying to get involved and make a difference or having a different viewpoint then someone else? Didn't think I had a chance because I'm too conservative re ideas to save dollars for taxpayers but tried any way. When elections for bonds, candidates etc. are held other than on regular election day, the turn-outs are always poor. If I had my way, any type of elections would be held on election day in November; this idea would save money for we the taxpayers and would get better attendance.

  9. Government is about control by way of taxation you are forced to fund the politicians scheme's via their co-conspirators. When they enact a law, they aren't asking you to behave a certain way, they are ordering you to do, or not do certain things via their hired enforcers (tax collectors, police, sheriff's) and will punish you if you disobey.

Lawmakers believe that they have an elitist right to dominate and extort you. If you do not like corporate welfare, business / bank bailouts or even a giant military / police state they do not care. You'll pay up or they'll send their thugs with guns to seize your property and put you in jail.

You may not like hearing this. You may just go on believing the rhetoric that politicians work for us and represent us and that by voting we can change the tyranny at any time. Obviously this past month it was proven that this cannot be done. Unless you lived in Nampa and now even the new mayor elect is proving beyond a shadow of a doubt he was just providing lip service to get elected. He will appoint a “good, reasonable and close friend” to fill he vacancy on the city council. Increased taxation resumes in January.

    1. Another hmmm for the thinking. One brings up the subject of the local newspaper, Are you aware of who the new public information person for the City of Nampa is? The Restaurant Grapevine's going to be drinking lots of coffee and discussing this issue.

    2. Vickie Schaffeld Holbrook, of the Idaho Press Tribune. She started out as a reporter covering education. Now she will be able to help manipulate the City by providing a good smoke and screen job to cover the new mayor's hiney.

Interestingly enough, the current PIO for the mayor's office is close to $67,000. What do you want to bet Ms. Vickie will make at least $10,000 higher than the current person there. Is there really that much day-to-day work to have a full time PIO on staff? I doubt it very much. Only one of the ways the mayor elect is not about saving the city money.

    3. It was reported in the local paper the pay would be $65K. Also, it has been discussed in the unofficial rumor mill the catalyst for the move was a move out of the area by the paper. Vickie has been with the paper for a long time and a change of pace and environment will be good for Vickie as well as the paper. There is an ad for a new managing editor in the classified section of the paper.

    4. It is all about information control. Releasing information that they want the public to hear, and covering up the real truth. Who knows what kind of dirt is going to be found under the carpet after Team Tom Dale leaves.

  11. Nampa finances have been a debacle for years for the city and the school district. Mr. Dale will be gone in a matter of days but heard on the radio today the school district is looking to float another override levy. We can only hope this goes down in flames and the school district learn to live within its means and quit squeezing the taxpayers. I am really tired of hearing how all of this is shortchanging our children.

    1. Must be the magic season, because that 5.3 million dollar school debt just magically went away. Hmmm, are you thinking what I'm thinking? Humbug. A no, no, no, campaign complete with signs, and posters needs to be launched against this kind of deceipt that is being fed to the public. Vote this levy down.

  12. I see in the ad for Vickie Holbrooks position that Nampa has been moved east of Boise. Typical of e IPT reporting.

Shankel, Brad Barnum, and their superiors, and many, many others, that your taxes will NOT go up???????

    2. Whoa, hold your horse. I have some Louisana swamp land and snake oil for you to buy if you really believe that Bujak was witch hunted. His advice along with the blind obedience of the commissioenrs cost the Canyon County taxpayers another $375,000.00 last week after a jury verdict.

  15. The talk amongst the Restaurant Grapevine folks is why did the County, the courts, the special interest groups, and the good ole boys spend so much money to put Bujak away and shut him up. Maybe we will hear the rest of the story in 2014 and beyond.

A public discourse on the issues of the day makes the world a better place.

We welcome comments but they will be moderated and edited if too long or do not have anything to do with the post.
Agree or disagree just do it without profanity or it won't get posted. Try to keep your comments to no more than 300 words. Too long and I will try to edit it down or simply delete the comment. The whole idea is to get people to read your comment. Don't use 10 words when one will do the job.

It's OK to have a difference of opinion but keep it civil. I have used the "delete" feature on myself at times.

The ANONYMOUS feature for comments seems to be the most user friendly. People have commented they have difficulty with the other methods of posting comments.
