CA Has New and Improved Primary This Year
First the primary is an open primary and the privacy of voters is maintained no matter what they select as their party in the primary.
Second, no matter how many votes the top vote getter's end up with in the primary, they will face an opponent in the November election by the person who got the next largest number of votes regardless of party. Could be two people from the same or opposing parties but no more having elections decided in the primary.
To my knowledge this is the first state to adopt this approach in deciding elected officials. It will make it a horse race all the way to November and it will give people a choice in both the primary and general elections.

A public discourse on the issues of the day makes the world a better place.
We welcome comments but they will be moderated and edited if too long or do not have anything to do with the post.
Agree or disagree just do it without profanity or it won't get posted. Try to keep your comments to no more than 300 words. Too long and I will try to edit it down or simply delete the comment. The whole idea is to get people to read your comment. Don't use 10 words when one will do the job.
It's OK to have a difference of opinion but keep it civil. I have used the "delete" feature on myself at times.
The ANONYMOUS feature for comments seems to be the most user friendly. People have commented they have difficulty with the other methods of posting comments.
You must think incumbents really want opposition and have to dicuss their records and defend them beyond the usual blather. I think they would pale at the mere mention of having to face an opponent in the November general elections.
ReplyDeleteThe repub leadership would dispose of this even if the voters approved of it just like they did term limits. It took them less than 10 minutes to undo a people's initiative in the first hour of the session.
