County Jail Site On Sale at Half Price

We learn today Canyon County Commishes have decided to put property they purchased for a jail out of town on Hwy 20/26 on the auction block with a starting bid of $1.1 million.  County Commissioners originally paid $2 million for the property they designated as a jail site.

Three bond issues have failed in their quest to build a new jail and now they want to get the property back on the tax rolls generating revenue for all the taxing districts impacted when they bought and removed the property from taxation.  The sole dissenting voice is the Canyon County Sheriff, Kieran Donahue.

Here's a link to the article in the local paper regarding the property auction:

  1. I truly have to wonder how these people get elected. History shows most of them weren't much better handling their own money than ours. I guess that raises the question who's smarter us or them?

    1. The NUT does not fall far from the Tree, WE elected the DUMMIES. Either we wanted something from them for nothing and parleyed up our vote, or just liked their face or name, OR just never bothered to get enough information about them and Vote. Some of these guys had STUPID written all over them nooobody noticed or cared enough to vote against them or let alone support a better candidate.

  2. I think we can all be thankful we aren't paying for a mega-jail complex. The price for it was way out of line for a county this size. Better to put a stop loss order on this site and quit looking in the rear view mirror. We may at some point need more jail space, the smart move would be to build on site and not be prescriptive about it.

    1. Here's what very well could have happened if Canyon County built the jail Sheriff Chris Smith was advocating,

  3. I heard they aren't going to ask for a jail anymore. I heard they are going to wait until the ACLU petitions the federal courts to make a ruling to bypass us at the voting booth and force it to be built with all the bells and whistles for a lot more than they were asking for. Can they really do that?

    1. The last Sheriff tried that tactic by neglecting maintenance issues and housekeeping in the jail, hoping the ACLU would somehow force the issue of a new jail. It didn't happen; the ACLU filed suit to get the jail we have cleaned up and broken systems and equipment repaired. They also got inmates off the floor and put a stop to overcrowded conditions. Despite saying it was impossible to use the tent as a jail facility it is now routinely used to house inmates. The ACLU won't mandate a new jail but they did extract nearly $200,000 for legal fees from Canyon County for their abuses and neglect in the operation of the jail we do have.

A public discourse on the issues of the day makes the world a better place.

We welcome comments but they will be moderated and edited if too long or do not have anything to do with the post.
Agree or disagree just do it without profanity or it won't get posted. Try to keep your comments to no more than 300 words. Too long and I will try to edit it down or simply delete the comment. The whole idea is to get people to read your comment. Don't use 10 words when one will do the job.

It's OK to have a difference of opinion but keep it civil. I have used the "delete" feature on myself at times.

The ANONYMOUS feature for comments seems to be the most user friendly. People have commented they have difficulty with the other methods of posting comments.
