Caldwell Mayor Dumps Parking Ticket on Taxpayers

We were rummaging through the Caldwell City check register and found the following:

"Check No: 66908 Check Date: 02/17/2010
Vendor: wells6 Wells Fargo Bank

Boise City,  Mayor's Boise Parking Ticket 01/07/2010 17.00

UnitedAL Mayor Nancolas/to Wash DC 01/07/2010 475.80

United Air MYAC/Rob Oates to Wash DC 01/07/2010 459.80

United MYAC 8 Flights to Wash DC 01/07/2010 3,246.40

United Air MYAC/Amanda Oates to Wash DC 01/07/2010 459.80

Unit Air L MYAC Chaparone. N White to Wash DC 01/07/2010 589.00

Check Total: 5,247.80"

It also appears there was urgent business for the Mayors Youth Advisory Council in Washington DC that necessitated  funding a total of 12 United Airline Tickets to our Nations Capitol.

It would be interesting to know what Mayor Nancolas got pinched for at the airport by the overly aggressive coppers and meter maids at the Airport.  We know from personal experience just how GESTAPO like things have deteriorated to at the airport for all travelers these days.

What is really irksome here is the Mayor gets $10,000.00 a year as a car allowance paid faithfully by Caldwell taxpayers each quarter in $2,500.00 installments.  We would like to think he could suck it up and pay for his parking transgressions out of the $10K he gets from taxpayers.

Nancolas gets highest car allowance for a mayor in this valley.  Contrast this with Mayor Dave Bieter who gets nothing for a car allowance.  We did a story on this a while back and Mayor Tom Dale got around $4,500.00/year for his car allowance back when the story was written.

Here's a link to the Caldwell City check register City of Caldwell Check Register  the above entry in this post can be found on page 287.

  1. Welcome to Caldwell (Bell Calif.) Idaho. A guy named Coles wound up in the clink over such mendacity. Keep tryin Garrett they are warming up your cot at the Greystone Hotel.

Welcome to Caldwell and Idaho, nothing elected officials do against the law would serve any public purpose to prosecute or words to that effect over the urban renewal agency paying for YMCA memberships.

They are operating with complete transparency even when it is a crime. They know nobody really cares enough to do anything.

  3. Amanda Oates and Rob Oates = $919.60 in airline tickets.

I wish my daddy or husband was a city council member so I could go to Washington, D.C. with him. WTF! There must be more to the story. I thought Oates was against government waste. What a bunch of crap!

    Explain Oates!

  4. The check register shows Mr. Nancolas loves to travel on the taxpayer's dime. I wonder how much traveling Nancolas does in comparison to the other mayors in the valley? It would be hard to imagine they could be out of town more than the Mayor of Caldwell.

I would like to see a cost benefit analysis of all this taxpayer supported traveling.

Also, noted was the bicycle repair school a CPD officer was sent to at taxpayer expense. I am trying to figure out why they can't just take their bicycles to the local bicycle repair shop rather than have taxpayers pay for this expensive repair seminar.

  5. I'm willing to give Oates a fair chance to explain on this one as there is a possiblity that the "chaperone's" (I'm thinking probably wife) and daughter's ticket were booked with the others so as to get a group rate. If he wrote a check back to the city it's not really an issue in my book.

That's about the only case I can think of that he'd get a pass for. Somebody ought to throw the question out to him at a city council meeting. If he gives something along the lines of the above explanation alright but if he stumbles through it will be priceless.

Kind of wondering why they needed to go to DC in the first place though? Garrett should pay his own ticket too.

  6. Oates resigned earlier this month to take a city job at the Caldwell Airport.

Looks like the Mayor can't even pony up to pay for his own basketball fundraiser raffle tickets and he does like to take people to lunch at taxpaer expense...found this. He feels it is necessary to stiff the taxpayers for a lousy $9 bucks.

    Found this on Check #69274

    3 Mt with Sheriff Smith 05/06/2010 20.40
    5 Mayor's Old Guy's/Raffle Tickets 04/15/2010 9.00
    2 Mt with Appointed Officials 05/10/2010 30.81
    7 Mayor & ElJay meeting 04/20/2010 22.97

  9. What I don't get is why the city is paying for the mayor's wife to go along on the trips with the kids/MYAC?

I had a friend of my wife tell me she was questioning how her daughter got to travel to Washington DC at no cost to them for anything. The city picked up the tab for air fare, ground transportation, meals etc. all at no cost to them.

Some of the items charged to the city taxpayers is very questionable. The parking ticket, the raffle tickets, all the trips charged to the city for the mayor's travel? Nancolas sure loves to travel at taxpayer's expense.

  10. Airplane tickets, etc, I don't see a problem. It is for a good cause that provides an excellent learning experience to a lot of kids in Caldwell. I wish both of my boys would have taken advantage of the opportunity to go when they were in school.

However, it does look bad taking out Sheriff Chris Smith to lunch (if that's true) and paying for a Boise Parking Ticket. That's just lame not to pay for those things yourself. These items should be paid without the help of taxpayers.

Has the Mayor been contacted about this issue?

  11. Do we really need to excuse such low ball behavior in our elected local officials. On one hand they invision themselves as Al Pacino in City Hall but on the next count they will pick up the change left for the waitress at the diner. Didnt we really pick sume champs. Chimps maybe.

  12. GA ...says

I think if elected officials wish to come over and have some gramcrackers and milk and talk over things that is fine.

Walking over one another to pick up the bill and stick it to taxpayers for breakfast, lunch or dinner seems wrong no matter how you look at it.

We put a high degree of trust in these people when we elected them and the check register charges look like they are money grubbing all the way to the last penny they can wring out of taxpayers.

  13. Hey Bullroar,
This Caldwell mayor dude is making a monkey out of the taxpayers! The Caldwell mayor looks more like "RATZO" in the movie "Midnight Cowboy".
"RATZO Nancolas", kind of has a ring to it doesn't it.
    Hot Postum!

  14. Great point GA! This kind of behavior is detrimental to Caldwell.

  15. Dear Patty,
I see a big problem using taxpayers money to buy airline tickets for the Mayor and his "students". This is not the Mayors job, to spend taxpayers money traveling all over the country at taxpayers expense, with his teenage entourage. Garrote must have not been popular when he was in school, so he's trying to be popular with teens now. Weird, huh! How old is Garrote anyway? He's definitely not a teen. Maybe he should see someone about this!
Maybe he could get the city to pay for a counselor. OK with me if you let your kids go with Garrote or better yet, take them yourself, but in either case, the TAXPAYER should not pick up the bill!
The Mayors job is to use the taxpayers hard earned money as carefully as possible, and not lard up his expense account with every little expense he can think of.
    Merry Christmas
    Hot Postum!

  16. My kids went to Washington DC and other historical places on the east coast but they earned the money to go. They went with either the Scouts or 4-H at our expense.

If I were a parent of one of these kids traveling on the City of Caldwell taxpayer's money, I would be very uncomfortable. To think that someone who is barely scraping by had to pay property taxes so my kid could go on a free trip to Washington bothers me to the core.

A free trip to Washingto teaches a kid nothing but disrespect for tax dollars and taxpayers.

  17. I think a major point is: Can we really risk having the mayor, city council, and their family and friends risk flying to these events. Their flights might get hijacked to Cuba.

  18. GA..
I see in a press release from Mayor Nancolas he has been appointed to another postion on the Board of the National League of Cities. My gut reaction is SO WHAT!.

I would like to know exactly what we get for our money spent on all the traveling around the mayor does. What is the cost benefit to Caldwell? No mayor in the history of Caldwell has traveled so much at public expense. His car allowance, travel budget, it does not make any sense. Does anyone have a clue what we get out of all the travel done by Nancolas?

Mayor Nancolas' door may be open but he is never there. A city official I know tried to get in to see the Mayor and was told he would have to wait nearly a month for a meeting with the Mayor. Now that just seems like everything but the business of Caldwell has taken over as the most important activity for our Mayor

  19. I would gladly buy an airline ticket for Mayor in Chief Nannycolas to Havana, Cuba as long as it is one way! Maybe he could become Mayor of Havana. I'm sure he could bring about the fall of communism in Cuba after a few years, with his rampant spending. He could take his Minister of Finance with him.
Until something like this happens, Caldwell's taxpayers doesn't stand a chance!
